David Gordon Green
The job may be dull, but the movie isn’t. Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch are a blue-collar odd couple painting yellow lines and laying orange cones across a desolate Texas landscape in Prince Avalanche, a charming adaptation of a 2011 Icelandic film titled Either Way. Prince Avalanche is a perfect midway point between […] two styles — humor drawn from flawed characters, pasted together with a painterly eye.

Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch play bickering road workers in a bitter-sweet study of male friendship. […] In [David Gordon] Green’s remake of the Icelandic two-hander Either Way, Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch dovetail perfectly as a pair of bickering road workers setting a stretch of Texas highway to rights after cataclysmic forest fires in 1987. Rudd’s Alvin is an angry, schlubby loner spending whole weeks away from his girlfriend; Hirsch’s Lance, who’s her brother, is immature and sex-obsessed. The movie’s characterisation is fonder and more detailed than this perhaps makes it sound.
Tim Robey / The Telegraph
Perhaps Green’s chief accomplishment in this odd little gem of a movie is that he coaxes that mutual compassion out of the characters without having to put it into words.
